ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT JEWELRY

Jewels are acquired for many number of reasons. However, the main purpose for having jewellery is to flaunt it. Gems are valued for their beauty, durability, and rarity. Their colour and clarity and the way they refract light make them desirable. Their hardness can be rated on a scale (the Mohs' scale), with 1 being the softest and 10 the hardest.

Most gemstones are minerals. Diamonds are the hardest. Other gemstones include ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz, peridot, opal, turquoise, lapis lazuli and jade. The mineral most commonly used as a gemstone is quartz. The crystalline variety includes rock crystal, rose quartz, citrine, smoky quartz, tiger's eye, and amethyst. Another variety, cryptocrystalline quartz, is more commonly referred to as chalcedony or, if it has stripes, agate. There are also organic gems, which include pearl, cultured pearl, coral and shell. Through the ages, any number of materials have been worked into pieces of jewellery: naturally occurring materials such as amber and jet; animal materials such as ivory, pearl, coral, and tortoiseshell; and materials such as glass, porcelain, plastic, and enamel, which imitate more precious substances.

Causes of Damage

The main damage to jewellery comes from wearing and handling. Settings can catch on things. Some stones are brittle and can crack or splinter if they are knocked too hard or even dropped, and soft stones can be scratched easily. Gold and silver are soft metals, especially when unalloyed, and can be scratched and deformed easily. Synthetic materials, such as plastic, can also be dented or broken.
While many gemstones are quite hard (higher than 8 on the Mohs' scale), they can also be brittle. Included in this group are rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and topaz. Soft stones, such as peridot, opal, and turquoise, are vulnerable to scratching. Opals contain water; therefore, extremes in temperature should be avoided because they will cause the stone to expand and contract. Gems in the quartz family (including citrine and amethyst) have an average hardness, but can be sensitive to heat and exposure to strong sunlight, both of which can lead to colour changes. The organic gems (pearls, coral, amber, and tortoiseshell) scratch easily. The chemicals in perfume, hair spray, and cosmetics can also cause damage to organic gems. Some gems, such as opal and turquoise, are particularly susceptible to staining because they are porous.

Handling and Storage

Before you decide to wear heirloom jewellery, consider whether or not there is a chance of damage or loss. Beautiful though it may be, if its loss or damage will diminish your family record, perhaps it is wiser to keep it safe.
If you decide to wear your heirloom jewellery — perhaps on very special occasions — it is a good idea to check it thoroughly to ensure that settings and clasps are secure, that links are not worn, and that hinges are working properly. Rings, bracelets, and cufflinks are prone to bumps and scrapes. Remove jewellery before rough or energetic activities. Carefully inspect all claw settings — the metal clasps that hold the jewels in place — to ensure that the gems are firmly gripped and cannot be accidentally dislodged. Loose claws and other damages should be treated by an expert jeweller.
Pendants should be worn on chains strong enough to hold them. Low-hanging pendants should not swing against other surfaces or get tangled in articles of clothing. Brooches should be worn only on appropriate fabrics (pushing a delicate pin through a heavy fabric might weaken the pin's fitting, and wearing a heavy pin on a light fabric could stretch or tear the fabric).
Jewels should be stored away from strong light, moisture, and dust. There are a variety of storage boxes available on the market. However, check that storage cases are lined with non-abrasive materials such as pure cotton, velvet, or satin. Jewellery rolls are a safe way to store chains or bead necklaces. As well, you can store jewellery in the presentation boxes they came in.
The worst place to store your jewellery is in a box or drawer, jumbled up with lots of other pieces. This invites scratches, damage, and breakage.

Cleaning and Repair

Cleaning and repair of heirloom gems and other jewellery should be left to professionals. There are many basic ways to care for jewellery at home, but these are more normally applied to modern items in good condition with low heritage value. Older items that have been passed down through generations may have incipient and sometimes invisible damage or deterioration, and should be treated with great caution.

KNOW YOUR METALS-PLATINUM,GOLD,DIAMONDS AND PEARLS

PLATINUM:

Platinum is one of the most durable metals. It is resistant to tarnishing and discolouration due to chlorine and other chemicals. However, despite its durability, platinum jewellery needs to be properly cared for. Platinum jewellery can be cleaned the same way as other fine jewellery. There are many jewellery cleaners which work with platinum,Store your jewellery separately, as even platinum can be scratched. If visible scratches appear, a professional polish may restore it to its beauty.

Watches need the same amount of attention as fine jewellery.
No matter how handy you are, don't attempt "do it yourself" watch repairs. Only a professional should try to repair your watch. Replace broken or scratched faces immediately. Even a hairline crack can allow moisture and dust in the working mechanism.
Remove watch when showering or when in contact with water, unless your watch is water-resistant.
Oils from your skin can build up on a watch. To clean, use a slightly damp cloth and dry.

GOLD:

Remove all gold jewellery before showering. Soap can cause a film to form on the pieces making them appear dull.
Be careful of chlorine. Chlorine can permanently damage or discolour your gold jewellery.
To remove tarnish from your jewellery, you can use a jewellery cleaner, or by using soap and water mixed with a few drops of ammonia. Carefully brush with a soft bristle brush. An old toothbrush can also be used.

DIAMONDS:

Diamonds may be the hardest substance known to man, but they can still be damaged or dulled.
Don't wear your diamonds when doing rough work. Even though a diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a hard blow.
Don't let your diamond come in contact with chlorine bleach or other chemicals, as they can discolour the mounting.
To clean, prepare a small bowl of warm suds with any mild liquid detergent. Brush pieces gently while they are still in the suds. Transfer to a wire strainer and rinse under warm running water.
You can also soak your diamond jewellery for 30 minutes in a mixture of half ammonia and water.

PEARLS:

The delicate nature of pearls makes them particularly susceptible to damage.
Apply cosmetics, hair sprays and perfume before putting on any pearl jewellery. When you remove your pearl jewellery wipe it carefully with a soft cloth to remove any traces of these substances.
Keep your pearl jewellery separate as its surface is soft and can be scratched by hard metal edges or by gemstones of other pieces.
Bring your pearls into your jewellers to have them restrung once a year.

JEWELRY CARE

Maintaining your gem's colourful sparkle! – Gemstone Jewellery
1.The best single piece of advise we can give you is to wipe your precious stone jewellery with a clean, soft damp cloth after wearing. This little habit will ensure that your jewellery is always looking its best. 2.When your gemstone jewellery is not being worn, storage in a soft pouch is recommended. 3.There are some things to avoid. Salt water and harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach or detergents can cause damage. The chemicals erode the finish and polish of the gems leaving them dull. Hairspray, perfume and perspiration can also cause dullness if not regularly cleaned off. 4.Because gemstones differ so much, so do their cleaning procedures. It really is best to have your Showcase jeweller advise you on them individually. We can also check its condition and advise you of any repairs that may be necessary to restore its full beauty and value. It's certainly the safest way to ensure you retain the value and sparkle of your treasured pieces
Protection
Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch. Try to keep pieces apart, so that they don't rub together or tangle up. ·Wear jewellery for appropriate tasks, avoid wearing rings when cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities. ·Don't let your jewellery come into contact with nail polish removers, perfume and hairspray ·Clean your jewellery regularly, use a professional jewellery cleaning product (always read the manufacturers instructions) ·When washing your hands (away from home) - don't place your rings on the wash basin - remove them and place them onto your necklace or place in a pouch in your handbag/purse ·Never go swimming in your jewellery, chlorine in swimming pools can cause damage
Keep hairspray and perfume away from your pearls, this can permanently damage the coating on your precious beads. After applying hairspray and perfume wait a few minutes for it to dry completely before putting on your pearls. Don't store pearls in plastic bags, always store in the box or silk pouch that they should be supplied with.

Take care of your jewellery and it will shine for years. Each piece of jewellery is individual, but as a general guide the National Association of Goldsmiths advises:· Gently rub gold and silver jewellery with a soft, clean cloth to maximise the shine.· Jewellery set with gems can be brought to life by careful cleaning with a soft brush and soapy water, or with a proprietary jewellery cleaning solution. Try not to get threaded pearl or bead jewellery wet and only wet antique jewellery after specialist advice - you could ruin it.· Wipe pearls with a soft damp cloth after wearing to remove perfume, hairspray and anything else likely to damage them.· Don’t use abrasive cleaners on jewellery.· You can use silver ‘dip’ type cleaners on most silver jewellery - but rinse and dry them thoroughly.· Don’t use silver ‘dip’ type cleaning solutions on gold jewellery, only special jewellery cleaners.· Keep jewellery carefully stored and separated - not jumbled together in a draw. · Keep chains fastened so that they don’t get tangled up.· A professional should check jewellery for damage or wear, on a regular basis.· Make sure you have a detailed insurance valuation for your jewellery. As a rough guide, the description in a professional jewellery valuation will be detailed enough that a jeweller could use it draw a pretty accurate sketch of the item. · If in any doubt about the care, repair or valuation of your jewellery ask the advice of a professional.
